MAX2320/MAX2321/MAX2322/MAX2324/MAX2326/ MAX2327 high-performance silicon germanium (SiGe) receiver front-end ICs set a new industry standard for low noise and high linearity at a low supply current. This family integrates a variety of unique features such as an LO frequency doubler and divider, dual low-noise amplifier (LNA) gain settings, and a low-current paging mode that extends the handset standby time. The MAX2320 family includes six ICs: four operate at both cellular and PCS frequencies, one operates at cellular frequencies, and one at PCS frequencies (see Selector Guide). Each part includes an LNA with a high input third-order intercept point (IIP3) to minimize intermodulation and cross-modulation in the presence of large interfering signals. In low-gain mode, the LNA is bypassed to provide higher cascaded IIP3 at a lower current. For paging, a low-current, high-gain mode is provided. The CDMA mixers in cellular and PCS bands have high linearity, low noise, and differential I
x 2 f) = 1/(21 x 2 x 2.3 x 109) = 3.29pF, rounded to 3.3pF. The measured value of arc OC is 0.93 units, so Z = 50/0.93 = 53.8. Thus, L2 = 53.8/ = 53.8/(2 f) = 53.8/(2 x 2.3 x 109) = 3.72nH, rounded to 3.8nH. Match for Stability In a third application, the MAX2320 PCS-Band LNA (Figure 4) operates at 13.5dB gain as described in the MAX2320 data sheet under high-gain, high-linearity mode of operation. The MAX2320 (a high-performance, silicon-germanium (SiGe) receiver front-end) is one of a 6-member family of ICs dedicated to dual-band, triplemode CDMA/TDMA/GSM handset applications. These devices set a new standard for low noise and high linearity at low supply current. They integrate a variety of features, including an LO frequency doubler and divider, gain settings for a dual low-noise amplifier (LNA), and a low-current paging mode that extends the handset standby time. This project entailed custom-tuning to modify the FM/cellular/PCS mixers all to a common 85MHz IF. This was required because of access to low-cost IF SAW filters. A compromise in _-IF performance at the PCS band resulted, because the RF receive-image filter and the duplexer didn't provide sufficient band-edge rejection. Nonetheless, the design proved surprisingly robust because of the high IP2 of the digital PCS mixer. The MAX2320 low-noise amplifier (LNA) plus mixer is designed for dual-band
starting point for new RF designs. They are not available as evaluation kits. Objective: For the RF mixer in the FM (AMPS) signal path, to optimize the trade-off between best linearity versus highest gain by custom-tuning the output matching circuit. The MAX2320 evaluation board was used to characterize the MAX2324, as the MAX2320 contains a superset of the features and will give virtually identical cellular band performance. Note that this IC offers both a digital (CDMA or TDMA) path mixer and an FM (AMPS) path mixer whose outputs are open collector. Varying their load line changes both the gain and the IIP3 performance (inversely proportional). In this application, the output match to the FM mixer was optimized for IIP3. The MAX2324 low-noise amplifier (LNA) plus mixer is designed for cellular band CDMA cell-phone handsets, but it can also be used in TDMA, GSM, or EDGE applications. It offers two LNA gain states to meet the required CDMA dynamic range, with a switchover hysteresis
IF SAWs Abstract: This reference design (RD) is for a dual-band, triple-mode CDMA front-end IC tuned for use with IF SAW filters. The RD modifies the FM/cellular/PCS mixers to a common 85MHz IF. The design uses a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with mixer, the MAX2320, that is also useful for TDMA, GSM, and EDGE applications.
